About me
Aley El-Din M. Tohamy, MD, is the Chair of Surgery and a board-certified surgeon at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center with extensive expertise in minimally invasive, robotic, bariatric, and general surgery. He specializes in advanced laparoscopic procedures, complex hernia repair, and robotic surgery, with expertise in bariatric surgery and its role in treating metabolic disease.
Dr. Tohamy treats patients for an array of conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, metabolic disease, and hiatal hernias. He performs specialized procedures such as bariatric surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction, as well as general surgeries for the gall bladder, colon, and small bowel. He utilizes robotic and minimally invasive procedures, resulting in faster recoveries and less pain for his patients.
As Chair of Surgery, Dr. Tohamy emphasizes his role in maintaining the integrity of the surgery department and holding high standards for patient care. He is committed to expanding the department and offering a broader spectrum of services that support the hospital and the community. Dedicated to improving patient outcomes, Dr. Tohamy leads with a commitment to innovation, research, and collaboration to optimize surgical processes. He is determined to explore and integrate emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and advanced robotics to enhance surgical precision, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
Widely recognized for his contributions to patient care, teaching, and research, Dr. Tohamy has been named a Top Doctor by Mainline Magazine since 2017 and Philadelphia Magazine since 2018. He has also received awards for teaching and research, including Best Teaching Award (2017) and Best Scientific Paper at Minimally Invasive Surgery Week (2025).
Dr. Tohamy is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery. He is also the President of the Metropolitan Philadelphia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.
